The Ramakrishna Math is the administrative and legal organization of the Ramakrishna Order, established in 1886 at Baranagar Math near Kolkata by the monastic disciples whom Ramakrishna Paramhansa had personally trained and initiated during his lifetime, with Swami Vivekananda as the principal figure among its sixteen founders. Though legally and financially separate from the related Ramakrishna Mission, the two operate as twin organizations sharing headquarters at Belur Math in West Bengal, with the Math focused on the monks' own spiritual development and the Mission on public service. Its guiding motto, for the liberation of the self and service to society, reflects Vivekananda's balance between personal spiritual realization and active social work.
