Plants whose significance is carried by the part that grows underground, dug rather than picked. The grouping earns its place because the lifting of a root is itself often ritualised, and because a root keeps: it can be dried, stored and traded long after the growth above ground has died back, which puts these plants into trade routes the others never enter. Several entries belong to living traditions that hold their own protocols over who may gather or administer them.
