The wording of the Sabian symbol for this degree is not reproduced here. The phrasing in general circulation is Dane Rudhyar's, from An Astrological Mandala (1973), and stays in copyright until 2069. The atlas has withheld its own reading of the degree along with it, because that reading followed the copyrighted image closely enough to stand in for it. What remains is the degree itself, its sign, its decan and its term, which are facts about the zodiac and belong to nobody.

An Old-Fashioned Wooden Pump

Counting from Aquarius's start, this is the twenty fifth degree, placing it in the sign's third decan. Its decan is ruled by Moon rather than Saturn, which colors the degree with something Aquarius does not supply on its own. The narrower term division belongs to Mars, a still finer layer of rulership laid across the sign and decan. Aquarius is fixed air, a stubborn commitment to an idea or a group rather than to a single feeling. One further source stands apart from the Jones and Rudhyar material entirely.

Charubel's 1898 degree symbols, compiled well before Balboa Park, give this degree an old-fashioned wooden pump; a man in rustic garb at the handle, pumping for a crowd with vessels reaching forward for them to be filled. Marc Edmund Jones drew this degree, with the other 359, from a shuffled deck in 1925, working with the clairvoyant Elsie Wheeler in Balboa Park, San Diego. His own book was not published until 1953. The version most often repeated since, though, is Dane Rudhyar's 1973 restatement in An Astrological Mandala, copyrighted material that this page does not reproduce. The value of a degree like this is less in prediction than in placement, a way of locating a moment precisely inside Aquarius's broader arc.

Aquarius 25: The Wooden Pump

Charubel's image for this degree is communal provision worked by hand: an old-fashioned wooden pump; a man in rustic garb at the handle, pumping for a crowd with vessels reaching forward for them to be filled. The pump is old-fashioned and wooden, a shared village fixture rather than a private tap, and the man at the handle is not drawing water for himself but pumping for a crowd, his own effort converted directly into a supply that many outstretched vessels are reaching to receive. Nothing in the image says he tires, though the labour of a hand pump is real and continuous, and nothing says the crowd thanks him, only that the vessels keep reaching forward, expectation as constant as the effort producing it.

Read at the twenty fifth degree of Aquarius, deep in the sign's humanitarian register, the picture is a plain diagram of what serving a collective actually costs one arm at a time, unglamorous, repetitive, physically real labour that a whole crowd depends on and that only one man is currently supplying. The wooden pump itself, simple and mechanical, needing nothing but muscle to work, is the degree's quiet insistence that grand collective welfare is very often built from exactly such humble, replicable machinery and the willingness of ordinary hands to keep working it. The shadow readings are a crowd that reaches forward without ever offering to take a turn at the handle, and a pumper who comes to resent the very vessels his own labour is filling. On a natal Saturn or eleventh-house Sun this degree tends to mark tireless providers for a group, and its counsel is simple: pump steadily, and teach another hand the handle.
