Muqarnas is a three dimensional architectural ornament of tiered, honeycomb-like niches used across the Islamic world to decorate domes, squinches, portals and vaults, resolving the transition from a square chamber to a round dome or arch into a cascade of small geometric cells. The form appears to have developed independently in Iraq and North Africa around the tenth or eleventh century and spread to become one of the most recognizable features of Islamic religious architecture, from the muqarnas vaults of the Alhambra to the portals of Persian and Central Asian mosques and madrasas. Surviving architectural scrolls such as the Topkapi Scroll record the geometric methods architects used to design muqarnas compositions.

Muqarnas As Three-Dimensional Ornament
Muqarnas is a form of architectural ornament built from many small nested, tiered niche-like cells, corbelled outward and stacked so that each tier oversails the one below it, used to decorate and structurally soften the transition between a flat wall or squinch and a dome, vault, or projecting cornice above it. Unlike flat surface decoration such as tilework or carved stucco, muqarnas is fully three-dimensional, catching real light and shadow across its many small concave and convex facets so that its appearance shifts through the day as the sun moves; the effect has often been compared to stalactites, though the resemblance is coincidental rather than the origin of the form.
Muqarnas can be built in stone, brick, carved and painted wood, or molded plaster and stucco, and the technique allowed builders to render extremely complex geometric transitions, portal hoods, domed ceilings, and the underside of arches, in a unified sculptural surface rather than a series of separate flat panels. Because assembling a muqarnas vault correctly requires solving the geometry of dozens or hundreds of individually shaped cells so that they fit together into a coherent overall dome or niche form, muqarnas design became a specialized craft with its own body of geometric knowledge passed between master builders.
Muqarnas From The Squinch to A Global Style
Muqarnas grew out of the same structural problem the plain squinch solved, carrying a dome over a square chamber, but by roughly the eleventh century builders in Iran and Iraq had begun multiplying the squinch's tiers into many smaller cells rather than a few large arched steps, and the device quickly outgrew its original structural role to become a decorative system applied wherever a builder wanted a rich three-dimensional surface, including doorways, niches, and purely ornamental ceiling zones with no load-bearing function at all. The geometric principles behind muqarnas design are recorded in surviving medieval design documents, including scrolls that preserve the underlying grid systems architects used to plan a muqarnas vault before construction, evidence that the form was taught as a rigorous craft rather than improvised.
From its Iranian and Iraqi origins muqarnas spread across the Islamic world with strong regional variation: Mamluk Egypt and Syria favored stone muqarnas carved directly into portal hoods and minaret balconies, Nasrid Spain produced extraordinarily fine plaster muqarnas ceilings at the Alhambra, and Iranian and Central Asian builders developed elaborate painted and glazed muqarnas half domes over grand iwan portals, so that the same underlying geometric idea produced strikingly different regional signatures depending on material and local craft tradition.
