Mishnaic Hebrew

Mishnaic Hebrew is the form of Hebrew used in the Talmudic texts, known in Hebrew as the language of the Sages. Scholars divide it into Mishnaic Hebrew proper, roughly the first two centuries of the Common Era, when it was still a spoken language, and Amoraic Hebrew, roughly 200 to 500 CE, which survived as a literary language only. It is a direct ancient descendant of Biblical Hebrew as preserved after the Babylonian captivity and was definitively recorded by Jewish sages in the Mishnah and other contemporary documents. Transitional forms appear in the halakhic midrashim, such as the Sifra, the Sifre and the Mekhilta of Rabbi Ishmael, and in the Tosefta. In this atlas the entry groups prayers, texts and other records whose language is rabbinic Hebrew rather than the earlier biblical form.
