A Monument Built in Stages Over a Thousand Years

Stonehenge is not a single design but the outcome of more than a millennium of building, rebuilding and reordering on one patch of Salisbury Plain.

The sequence of construction

The earliest phase, around 3000 BCE, was a circular earthwork bank and ditch enclosing a ring of pits, some holding cremated human remains, making the site one of the largest cremation cemeteries of its period in Britain. The famous stones came later. The bluestones, several tonnes each, were brought from the Preseli hills of west Wales some 200 kilometres away, an extraordinary feat whose method and motive are still debated. The great sarsens, the largest weighing over 20 tonnes, were dragged from about 25 kilometres north and raised around 2500 BCE into the trilithons and the outer circle with their curved, jointed lintels. Recent work has traced most of the sarsens to West Woods near Marlborough.

Alignment and purpose

The axis of the monument is aligned on the midsummer sunrise in one direction and the midwinter sunset in the other, and the winter alignment may have been the more important, tying the site to the turning of the year. Beyond that, its purpose is genuinely uncertain and probably plural: a temple, a cemetery, a place of healing, a solar calendar and a gathering place have all been argued, and the astronomical claims range from the sober to the extravagant. It stood within a wider ceremonial landscape linked to nearby Durrington Walls, where the builders seem to have feasted.

Druids, solstice and stewardship

Stonehenge has no demonstrable connection to the ancient Druids, who belong to a much later Iron Age; the association was invented by antiquarians in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. It has nonetheless become the principal gathering place for modern Druids, Pagans and solstice-goers, and access at the solstices is negotiated between those communities and the site's managers. It is a World Heritage site in the care of English Heritage.

What Megalithic Astronomy Actually Shows

Not every claimed astronomical alignment in prehistoric monuments holds up, and saying so honestly is part of what makes the real cases credible. Alexander Thom's mid-twentieth-century surveys of British and Irish megalithic sites proposed an extraordinarily precise prehistoric observatory tradition, including claimed sightlines accurate to a fraction of a degree across dozens of sites, implying a sophisticated shared astronomical science across Neolithic Britain.

Clive Ruggles's later, more rigorous statistical re-survey found that most of Thom's claimed precise alignments do not survive careful testing once the sheer number of stones and possible sightlines at a large site is accounted for; with enough stones in a ring, some alignment to some solar or lunar event is close to guaranteed by chance alone; and Ruggles showed that the genuinely secure cases are fewer, cruder in precision, and more plausibly seasonal or ceremonial markers than a working scientific instrument.

What remains after that correction is still real and still remarkable. Stonehenge's main axis is reliably aligned to the midsummer sunrise and midwinter sunset, a deliberate choice repeated at other major sites. Newgrange's passage is built so that only at the winter solstice does the rising sun's light travel down its full length to illuminate the inner chamber, a feat of construction planning that could not be accidental. The honest picture is narrower than Thom's but no less genuine: real solstice-watching, real monumental planning, and real astral religious meaning, without needing to claim more precision than the stones themselves can support.

Where the Bluestones Came From

The bluestones at Stonehenge's centre travelled roughly 200 kilometres from Wales, and a 2021 excavation may have found where they stood first.

Tracing the quarries

Geological matching has pinned specific bluestones to outcrops in the Preseli Hills of west Wales, including Carn Goedog and Craig Rhos-y-felin, where a team led by Mike Parker Pearson identified quarrying traces consistent with Neolithic extraction. How the stones, each weighing several tonnes, moved from Wales to Salisbury Plain is unresolved; sledges and log rollers over land, rafts along rivers and coastline, or some combination have all been argued, and no route has been confirmed by finds along the way.

A circle that may have moved twice

In 2021 Parker Pearson's team reported excavations at Waun Mawn, a partly dismantled stone circle in Preseli whose surviving socket holes match the diameter of Stonehenge's earliest earthwork and include one socket shaped to fit a bluestone later identified at Stonehenge itself. Their hypothesis is that a circle first stood in Wales and was later dismantled and re-erected on Salisbury Plain, an idea published in Antiquity that has not yet displaced simpler transport-only explanations.

Why anyone bothered

Whatever the route, moving stones this size this far was a deliberate, costly choice, which is itself evidence for how much the specific source mattered to the builders.
