Shrine of Baha'u'llah

Baha'i Faith Sites

A modest stone house at Bahji, near Akko (Acre) in northern Israel, holding the remains of Baha'u'llah, founder of the Baha'i Faith, who died on 29 May 1892 and was laid to rest that evening in the northernmost room of a house that had belonged to his son-in-law. Baha'is regard it as the holiest site of their religion and face toward it, as their Qiblih, during daily obligatory prayer, in the way Muslims face Mecca. The shrine itself has a central courtyard beneath a glass roof, its paths laid with Persian rugs, with Baha'u'llah's remains held in a small chamber at the northwest corner. The Universal House of Justice administers a structured nine-day pilgrimage there for registered Baha'is, though the grounds welcome visitors of every faith.
