The temple built around the resting place (samadhi) of Sai Baba, an ascetic who lived in the town of Shirdi in what is now Maharashtra's Ahilyanagar district until his death in 1918, venerated by Hindus and by some Muslims for teachings that drew on both traditions without formally belonging to either. The shrine is managed by the Shri Saibaba Sansthan Trust, Shirdi, a public trust originally registered under the Bombay Public Trusts Act of 1950 and later reconstituted under its own Maharashtra state statute, the Shree Sai Baba Sansthan Trust (Shirdi) Act of 2004, whose management committee includes appointees of the state government. It is one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in India and among the wealthiest religious trusts in the country.
