Nephi is one of the central figures described in the Book of Mormon. In the Latter Day Saint movement he is the son of Lehi, a prophet, and the founder of the Nephite people. The Book of Mormon describes him as the author of its first two books, First Nephi and Second Nephi. In the narrative his family flees Jerusalem at a divine command but returns twice, first to retrieve the brass plates from a man named Laban, whom Nephi kills after being prompted by the Holy Spirit, and then to bring Ishmael's family along. The atlas records him as the internal author of those two books within the Latter Day Saint scriptural tradition.
