Ancient Israel

The Near East and Egypt

Ancient Israel is used here for the two Israelite kingdoms of Israel and Judah that existed in the Southern Levant during the Iron Age. Their history began with the early appearance of the Israelites in the hill country of Canaan, and the earliest documented mention of Israel as a people is on the Merneptah Stele, an Egyptian inscription dating to around 1208 BCE. The article records that archaeological evidence suggests ancient Israelite culture evolved from the earlier Canaanite civilization, and that during the Iron Age II period two kingdoms emerged, Israel in the north and Judah in the south. The Hebrew Bible describes a United Monarchy under Saul, David and Solomon before the division, a claim whose historicity is debated, while historians agree that the two kingdoms existed as separate states by about 900 and 850 BCE.
