A Barrier Against Gog and Magog, and an Infant Who Spoke From the Cradle

Hizb 31 opens with Khidr finally explaining his three puzzling actions to Moses once Moses can no longer hold his questions back: the boat was damaged deliberately to keep a tyrant from seizing a working vessel, the youth was taken before he could grow into a source of grief for his righteous parents, and the wall was rebuilt without payment to protect a hidden treasure for two orphans until they come of age, each act concealing a mercy Moses could not have seen in advance.

The sura then completes the story of Dhul-Qarnayn, a righteous traveling ruler who journeys to a western place of murky water, to an eastern people with no shelter from the sun, and finally builds a barrier of iron and molten copper to protect a people from Gog and Magog, a barrier the text says will eventually be breached as a sign of the approaching Hour. Al-Kahf closes with the image of the sea itself running out as ink before God's words could be exhausted.

The hizb then carries the whole of Maryam: Zechariah's prayer answered with a son in his old age, the annunciation of Jesus to Mary and his birth, the infant Jesus speaking from the cradle to defend his mother's honor, and Abraham's gentle argument with his own idol worshipping father, closing on a warning against the claim that God has taken a son.

Opening Juz 16 by Finishing a Story Whose Meaning Was Withheld

Hizb 31 opens Juz 16 with the explanation this account flagged as withheld when Al-Kahf's Khidr narrative was introduced in Hizb 30, so a listener following tarawih night by night only receives the resolution here, one juz later than the puzzle itself was posed, a genuine narrative delay rather than an artifact of the hizb boundary.

In tarawih recitation this hizb typically opens the sixteenth night, and its four rub al-hizb quarters carry a reciter from that resolution through Dhul-Qarnayn's travels and into the whole of Maryam, three quite different narrative registers, philosophical instruction, adventure narrative, and family and nativity story, inside one hizb's length.

Huffaz reviewing this hizb by quarter often treat the crossing from Al-Kahf into Maryam as one of the more welcome transitions in the whole scheme, since Maryam's intimate, tender register after the more abstract material that precedes it gives a natural change of pace roughly two thirds of the way through the hizb.

That delayed payoff is itself unusual within the thirty-juz scheme, where most puzzles a sura poses are resolved within the same hizb or the next one at most, making the Khidr narrative one of the longest single spans between a question raised and an answer finally given anywhere in the recitation cycle.
