Ben Sira

Jewish Sages

Simon ben Jesus ben Eliezer ben Sira, known as Ben Sira and also called Jesus ben Sira or Sirach, was a Hellenistic Jewish scribe, sage and allegorist from Jerusalem in the Second Temple period, active in the 2nd century BCE under Seleucid rule. He is the author of the Book of Sirach, also known as Ecclesiasticus. He wrote the work in Hebrew, possibly in Alexandria around 180 to 175 BCE, where he is thought to have founded a school. A medieval text, the Alphabet of Sirach, was falsely attributed to him, so his name should not be confused with that later work.
