Hosea is a prophet of the Hebrew Bible and one of the first literary prophets, whose prophecies make up the Book of Hosea, the first of the twelve Minor Prophets. The book is remembered for its descriptions of God's love for Israel in spite of her faithlessness, a relationship paralleled by Hosea's own marriage to Gomer: he marries an unfaithful woman, they become estranged, and at God's command he takes her back. The later chapters threaten grave punishment, especially to the northern kingdom, if it does not repent. As one of the earliest prophets who left a written record of his oracles, Hosea was greatly influential on later prophets such as Jeremiah and Ezekiel. He is entered here so the haftarah readings drawn from the Book of Hosea can be attributed to their traditional author.
