They are built on a common vocabulary of cycles, pairings and correspondences that runs through calendar-keeping, medicine, divination and the placement of buildings.FactsLearn MoreAll Eastern SystemsSourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)FactsOverviewScope of This SectionWell-attestedThe correlative cosmology of China and East Asia: phase, polarity and cycle applied alike to the calendar, the sky, the body and the placing of things, so that one vocabulary serves astronomy, medicine and divination at once. 1Learn MoreChinese and East Asian Cosmology This section gathers the cosmological and medical systems of China and East Asia: the five phases of wu xing (wood, fire, earth, metal and water), the ten heavenly stems and twelve earthly branches of the sexagenary cycle, the twenty-four solar terms of the agricultural year, the eight trigrams and their sixty-four combinations, the twenty-eight lunar mansions (xiu), the meridians of Chinese medicine, and the mudras and godai of East Asian Buddhism. What unifies them is a way of thinking in terms of correspondence and phase rather than substance: the world is read as patterns of relationship (generating and overcoming, yin and yang, the turning of cycles), into which times, directions, organs, colours and events can all be sorted. From cosmology to daily life These systems are not purely theoretical. The stems and branches number years, months, days and hours and underlie the Chinese zodiac; the solar terms schedule planting and harvest; the meridians organise acupuncture and the pulse; the trigrams and hexagrams are consulted for guidance. The material reaches from the oldest strata of the Chinese canon to systems carried into Japan and Korea, where the godai and the mudras of Shingon and other schools took their own form. The I Ching itself, whose hexagrams these trigrams build, sits at the border of this section and Tarot, Runes & Number, since it is at once a cosmology and a method of divination. All Eastern SystemsFilter Results203 entriesAssociated WithAllAgni (1)Akshobhya (1)Amitabha (1)Amoghasiddhi (1)Avalokiteshvara (1)Earth (6)Fire (3)Kali (1)Metal (4)Ratnasambhava (1)Shakyamuni Buddha (1)Shani (1)Shiva (1)Surya (1)Tara (1)Vairochana (1)Varuna (1)Vayu (1)Vishnu (2)Water (6)Wood (4)Attested InAllGheranda Samhita (32)Hatha Yoga Pradipika (15)Component KindAllEarthly Branch (12)Heavenly Stem (8)Trigram (4)ElementAllEarth (2)Fire (2)Metal (2)Water (2)Wood (2)PalaceAllAzure Dragon of the East (Chinese Xiu Mansions) (7)Black Tortoise of the North (Chinese Xiu Mansions) (7)Vermilion Bird of the South (Chinese Xiu Mansions) (7)White Tiger of the West (Chinese Xiu Mansions) (7)SeasonAllAutumn (6)Spring (6)Summer (6)Winter (6)Yin YangAllYang (12)Yin (14)Belongs To TraditionAllBuddhism (9)Hinduism (17)PolarityAllYang (17)Yin (17)Trine GroupAllChildren Trine (Children, Friends, Parents) (3)First Trine (Rat, Dragon, Monkey) (3)Fourth Trine (Rabbit, Goat, Pig) (3)Life Trine (Life, Wealth, Career) (3)Second Trine (Ox, Snake, Rooster) (3)Siblings Trine (Siblings, Health, Property) (3)Spouse Trine (Spouse, Travel, Fortune) (3)Third Trine (Tiger, Horse, Dog) (3)Fixed ElementAllEarth (4)Fire (2)Metal (2)Water (2)Wood (2)ChakraAllHeart (2)Root (2)Sacral (3)Solar Plexus (4)Show ResultsBrowseCompareSelect all 100AbhayaMudrasAgniMudrasAnjaliMudrasApanaMudrasBáilùSolar TermsBakasanaArm Balance AsanasBalasanaRestorative AsanasBhadrasanaSeated AsanasBharadvajasanaTwist AsanasBhujangasanaBackbend AsanasBhumisparshaMudrasBi (Net)White Tiger of the WestBi (Wall)Black Tortoise of the NorthBingHeavenly StemsBingTwenty-Four MountainsCareer PalaceZi Wei Dou Shu PalacesChenTwenty-Four MountainsChildren PalaceZi Wei Dou Shu PalacesChinMudrasChouTwenty-Four MountainsChūnfēnSolar TermsChǔshǔSolar TermsDàhánSolar TermsDàshǔSolar TermsDàxuěSolar TermsDhanurasanaBackbend AsanasDharmachakraMudrasDhyanaMudrasDi (Root)Azure Dragon of the EastDingHeavenly StemsDingTwenty-Four MountainsDogChinese AnimalsDōngzhìSolar TermsDou (Dipper)Black Tortoise of the NorthDragonChinese AnimalsDuiBagua TrigramsEarthWu Xing (Five Phases)Eight WhiteFlying StarsEmpowerment-Bound Tantric MudrasMudrasFang (Room)Azure Dragon of the EastFireWu Xing (Five Phases)Five YellowFlying StarsFortune PalaceZi Wei Dou Shu PalacesFour GreenFlying StarsFriends PalaceZi Wei Dou Shu PalacesGarudasanaStanding AsanasGenBagua TrigramsGenTwenty-Four MountainsGengHeavenly StemsGengTwenty-Four MountainsGoatChinese AnimalsGomukhasanaSeated AsanasGorakshasanaSeated AsanasGuiHeavenly StemsGuiTwenty-Four MountainsGui (Ghost)Vermilion Bird of the SouthGuptasanaSeated AsanasGǔyǔSolar TermsGyanMudrasHaiTwenty-Four MountainsHánlùSolar TermsHealth PalaceZi Wei Dou Shu PalacesHorseChinese AnimalsJiHeavenly StemsJi (Winnowing Basket)Azure Dragon of the EastJiaHeavenly StemsJiaTwenty-Four MountainsJiao (Horn)Azure Dragon of the EastJing (Well)Vermilion Bird of the SouthJu MenZi Wei Dou Shu StarsKaliMudrasKanBagua TrigramsKang (Neck)Azure Dragon of the EastKui (Legs)White Tiger of the WestKukkutasanaArm Balance AsanasKunBagua TrigramsKunTwenty-Four MountainsKurmasanaForward Bend AsanasLiBagua TrigramsLian ZhenZi Wei Dou Shu StarsLìchūnSolar TermsLìdōngSolar TermsLife PalaceZi Wei Dou Shu PalacesLìqiūSolar TermsLiu (Willow)Vermilion Bird of the SouthLìxiàSolar TermsLotusMudrasLou (Bond)White Tiger of the WestMakarasanaRestorative AsanasMandukasanaKneeling AsanasMángzhòngSolar TermsMaoTwenty-Four MountainsMao (Hairy Head)White Tiger of the WestMarichyasanaTwist AsanasMatsyasanaBackbend AsanasMatsyendrasanaTwist AsanasMayurasanaArm Balance AsanasMetalWu Xing (Five Phases)MonkeyChinese AnimalsMuktasanaSeated Asanas123Next →Sources1.
