The Roman Catholic Diocese of Wilmington filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on 18 October 2009 in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware, the seventh US diocese to do so amid clergy sexual abuse litigation. On 2 February 2011 the diocese reached a mediated settlement of 77.4 million dollars with roughly 146 to 150 alleged victims. U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Christopher Sontchi confirmed the Second Amended Chapter 11 Plan of Reorganization on 28 July 2011, describing the case as the most difficult of his career, and the plan took effect on 26 September 2011. The confirmed trust ultimately totaled roughly 105 million dollars once a codefendant religious order added its own contribution to the diocese's 77.5 million dollars, and the diocese agreed to turn over its internal files on accused priests as part of the settlement.

Key FindingWilmington's case shows the same two step shape as Los Angeles's and San Diego's: a mediated figure between the diocese and claimants, 77.4 million dollars, followed by a larger confirmed trust once a codefendant religious order's own funds were added, bringing the total near 105 million dollars for the same claimant pool. 1 Inquiry Profile
