Triptych of St Cuthbert (British Museum, after Duez, 1879)

Christian Art

An etching reproducing Ernest Duez's 1879 triptych painting of Cuthbert of Lindisfarne, in three panels: the young Cuthbert kneeling in prayer after a vision while guarding his flock, Cuthbert as a boy watching an eagle bring him and a companion a fish, and the elderly Cuthbert ordering birds away from barley he had just sown. Published in the art journal L'Art, volume XVIII, in 1879. Held today by the British Museum.

The British Museum's own curatorial title names St Cuthbert outright across all three panels, corroborated by the Musee d'Orsay's record of the original painting's identical three scenes.
