A Field Guide to the Stars and Planets

Donald H. Menzel's A Field Guide to the Stars and Planets, published by Houghton Mifflin in 1975 as part of the Peterson Field Guide series, introduced the now standard grouping of the 88 IAU constellations into eight informal families, including the Heavenly Waters group, a classification since adopted widely in popular and some academic astronomy writing. Menzel was a Harvard astronomer and a recognised authority in observational astronomy. Its strength is that the Peterson series has a decades long reputation for accuracy in field science guides, and Menzel's own professional standing backs the astronomical content specifically. Its limit is that the constellation-family grouping is an organisational convenience of Menzel's own devising for the guide, not an ancient or internationally standardised astronomical classification, so a claim treating the family groupings as historically ancient rather than as a modern teaching device would overstate what this source establishes.
