John Nelson's study is a direct ethnography, following the ritual calendar of one specific contemporary Shinto shrine over the course of a full year based on his own fieldwork there, rather than describing Shinto practice generally from secondhand report. That firsthand, single site fieldwork method is the study's real evidentiary basis.
