States acceptable grounds for divorce include adultery (with four eyewitnesses required if denied), a husband's refusal to maintain the family economically, a husband's refusal of conjugal relations for more than three months, physical or sexual abuse of a spouse or children, and incompatibility too severe to reconcile, and states plainly that both divorced men and women are permitted to remarry other mates. States Islam limits polygamous marriage to four wives and discourages the practice generally, permitting an additional wife only where a first wife is chronically ill and cannot fulfil the obligations of marriage, is unable to have children, or under wartime conditions where marrying widows may be necessary to provide for orphans, quoting the Qur'anic caution that a man who cannot deal justly between wives should marry only one, and notes that Ahmadi followers must comply with local civil laws against polygamy where they reside.
