Among the Ibos of Nigeria

G. T. Basden's Among the Ibos of Nigeria is an early twentieth century ethnographic account written by a missionary who lived among Igbo communities, and it needs to be read with that origin in view. Its value lies in direct, detailed firsthand observation of practices, material culture and social structure that a later observer could not recover, making it a genuinely useful primary record for historians. Its limit is equally direct: Basden wrote as a missionary invested in Christian conversion, and his framing of indigenous religious practice reflects early colonial-era missionary attitudes toward what he often described as superstition, a lens that later Igbo and African scholars have specifically corrected and contextualized. Use it for descriptive detail, and weigh its interpretive judgments against later indigenous and academic scholarship rather than at face value.
