The Annuarium Statisticum Ecclesiae is the Holy See's own annual statistical yearbook, compiled by the Central Office of Church Statistics from figures dioceses around the world report to Rome each year, chiefly counts of baptisms, clergy, parishes and other institutional measures. As the Church's own centralized tally of its own administrative records, it is the correct and authoritative source for what the Catholic Church itself counts and reports about its membership and structure. Its limit is that it measures sacramental record keeping, baptisms entered in parish registers, rather than an independent demographic survey of religious self identification or actual practice, so a claim about lived belief or attendance needs a different kind of source, and a national figure can also be shaped by how completely a given country's dioceses report to Rome in a given year.
