Brihat Samhita

Varahamihira's Brihat Samhita is a primary ancient Indian treatise on astrology, astronomy and natural phenomena; the atlas records no publisher and no exact publication year because it survives through manuscript transmission rather than a single dated modern edition. Its strength is that it is the foundational primary source itself for much of classical Indian astrological doctrine, in its author's own systematic treatment. Its limit is the ordinary one for citing a classical treatise without specifying a translation: this record does not establish which edition or translation underlies a given quotation from it.
