Canon Formation in the Sikh Tradition (Gurinder Singh Mann)

Gurinder Singh Mann's Canon Formation in the Sikh Tradition, hosted as a PDF by his own Global Institute for Sikh Studies, was originally published as a chapter in Sikh Religion, Culture and Ethnicity, edited by Christopher Shackle and others, Curzon Press, 2001. Mann, a specialist in Sikh scripture who held the Sikh studies chair at UC Santa Barbara, examines the making of the Adi Granth compiled by Guru Arjan and the Kartarpur manuscript debate over its status as the original volume. Its strength is that it is a peer-reviewed scholarly chapter by a leading specialist, here made freely available through the author's own institute. Its limit is that the Kartarpur manuscript's authenticity remains a live scholarly and community dispute, so a claim treating it as settled needs to be corrected against that disagreement.
