Censo Demografico 2010, the Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatistica's 2010 official national census, recorded 3.8 million Spiritists, about 2 percent of Brazil's population, an increase of about 65 percent over the 2000 census. Its strength is that it is the official national census, the most authoritative available count of self reported religious affiliation in Brazil. Its limit is that a census counts self identified affiliation; it does not itself explain the reasons behind the reported growth, which needs separate scholarly analysis.

NotesSpiritists 3.8 million, about 2 per cent of the population, up about 65 per cent on 2000.
