Angana Chatterji's Violent Gods is a six and a half year ethnographic study of Hindu nationalist mobilization in the Indian state of Orissa (now Odisha), built from fieldwork conducted between 2002 and 2008 and centered on the anti-Christian and anti-Muslim violence that culminated in the Kandhamal riots of December 2007 and August to October 2008. Chatterji, an anthropologist, situates the Kandhamal violence within a longer campaign by Hindu nationalist organizations to reshape Adivasi and Dalit religious identity in the region.
