Church and State in Tonga: The Wesleyan Methodist Missionaries and Political Development, 1822 to 1875, Sione Latukefu's 1974 scholarly history from Australian National University Press, is a classic academic history, by a Tongan historian, of Taufaahau, later George Tupou I's adoption of Christianity and use of the Wesleyan mission to unify Tonga, ending at the 1875 constitution he promulgated. Its strength is that it is written by a Tongan historian of the events he describes. Its limit is that its own scope ends at 1875; it does not reach later court tests or legislative proposals to relax the constitution's religious provisions, which postdate the book.
