Church of Our Lady Mary of Zion, Aksum (Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church)

This is the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church's own institutional presentation of its chapel at Aksum, traditionally claimed as the resting place of the Ark of the Covenant and guarded by a single appointed monk who alone may view it, a claim rooted in the church's own Kebra Nagast tradition. As the custodian church's own account it is the correct source for what the church itself asserts and for the ritual practices surrounding the claim. Its limit is that it presents the church's own religious tradition rather than independent verification, since the Ark itself is never produced for outside examination, so a claim treating the Ark's presence at Aksum as historically established fact, rather than as the Ethiopian church's own sincerely held tradition, needs a different kind of source.
