Records of Early English Drama: Chester, edited by Lawrence M. Clopper, University of Toronto Press and Manchester University Press 1979, is a critical edition of Chester's own civic and guild records of the mystery plays, one of the first two volumes in the Records of Early English Drama project. Its strength is that it is a critical edition of primary archival material from the standard reference series for this subject. Its limit is that it presents the civic records themselves rather than an interpretive analysis of the plays' content.
