Cogitosus' seventh century Life of Saint Brigit, in Sean Connolly's scholarly translation published in the Journal of the Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland in 1987, is the earliest surviving hagiography of the saint. Its strength is that Connolly's is a peer-reviewed academic translation with scholarly commentary, not a popular retelling. Its limit is that the underlying text is itself a devotional hagiography written centuries after Brigit's traditional lifetime, so its miracle narratives are legendary material rather than verified biography.
