Mohammad Hashim Kamali's Crime and Punishment in Islamic Law: A Fresh Interpretation, Oxford University Press, 2019, is a scholarly study. Its strength is that Kamali, an established scholar of Islamic law, argues from the Quranic text itself that no worldly penalty for apostasy is prescribed there, a reasoned scholarly position rather than a survey of practice. Its limit is the ordinary one for a single scholar's own reinterpretation of a contested area: it is Kamali's own reading, influential but not the only scholarly position on ridda, and should be read alongside scholars who read the classical sources differently.
