Damascus: A History

Ross Burns's Damascus: A History, Routledge, 2005, is a scholarly history. Its strength is that it is a sustained, single volume academic account of the city across its full historical span, useful for a city whose history is otherwise scattered across many period specific studies. Its limit is the ordinary one for a broad single volume history: depth on any one era is necessarily lighter than a monograph devoted to that period alone.
