Maya Deren's Divine Horsemen: The Living Gods of Haiti is an unusual primary-adjacent source, a book by a filmmaker and artist who became an initiated practitioner of Haitian Vodou and wrote from that combined position of ethnographic observer and participant, accompanied by her own footage that became a landmark ethnographic film.
