A peer reviewed academic monograph and the standard critical study of the Janam-sakhis, the traditional hagiographic accounts of the life of Guru Nanak. Its strength is that it is the recognized scholarly reference for how the Janam-sakhi tradition developed and how its different textual lineages relate to one another. Its limit is that, like any single critical study of a manuscript tradition, its particular textual judgments are open to be weighed against other specialists' readings of the same manuscripts.
