Eleusis and the Eleusinian Mysteries

George E. Mylonas excavated at Eleusis, and this Princeton University Press book is his own scholarly study of the sanctuary and the Eleusinian Mysteries, covering the archaeology of the Telesterion and the discipline of silence that kept the ritual's interior undescribed by ancient witnesses. Its strength is that it is the excavator's own firsthand study, giving direct archaeological documentation independent of Walter Burkert's later broader survey of Greek religion, already cited elsewhere in this atlas. Its limit is that Mylonas can document the site and its physical remains but, by the very discipline of silence he describes, cannot recover what actually happened inside the Telesterion, so a claim about the Mysteries' actual ritual content remains necessarily speculative beyond what any source, including this one, can establish.
