A reference encyclopedia biography of Eloy Alfaro, president of Ecuador 1895 to 1901 and 1906 to 1911, covering the anticlerical program of his Liberal Revolution: the seizure of church property, the expulsion of religious orders, the prohibition on new monasteries and convents, the legalization of civil marriage and divorce, the establishment of free secular education, the opposition of Archbishop of Quito Federico Gonzalez Suarez, and Alfaro's own death on 28 January 1912, when a mob broke into the prison holding him after a failed political comeback, killed him and burned his corpse.
