Perry Miller's Errand into the Wilderness, Harvard University Press, 1956, is a scholarly essay collection. Its strength is that Miller was the twentieth century historian most responsible for establishing Puritan intellectual history as a serious academic field, and these essays remain foundational to it. Its limit is that later historians have significantly revised parts of Miller's own reading of Puritan thought, particularly his tendency to treat it as more unified and less contested internally than it actually was.
