Wilson is a historian of early modern Europe, and this Allen Lane book is his major scholarly general history of the Thirty Years War, the conflict that devastated much of Central Europe between 1618 and 1648 along religious as well as political and dynastic lines. Its strength is comprehensive scope grounded in extensive archival research, treating the war's religious dimension, Protestant and Catholic conflict across the Holy Roman Empire, as genuinely entangled with dynastic and political rivalry rather than reducing the war to religion alone or dismissing religion's role. Its limit is that as a broad general history it covers an enormous span of territory and time, so a claim needing detailed focus on one specific battle, principality or year is better served by a narrower specialist study alongside this general history.
