Published 27 March 2024, reporting that the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland's Synod of Bishops voted 9 to 1 on 12 March 2024 to propose to the General Synod a compromise allowing two parallel understandings of marriage, one defining it as between a husband and a wife and the other as between two persons, each priest choosing which to follow, with continued freedom of conscience to decline officiating a same-sex marriage. Quotes Archbishop Tapio Luoma explaining the rationale: a priest may still say marriage is between a man and a woman while the church recognises marriage can also be understood another way. States one of the ten bishops, Matti Salomaki, filed a dissenting opinion.
