Peter Green is a historian of the ancient Mediterranean, and this University of California Press book is his scholarly history of the Hellenistic age, from Alexander the Great's conquests to the Battle of Actium. Its strength is that it is a wide ranging, well regarded synthesis covering the full Hellenistic period's political and cultural history in one volume by a specialist classicist. Its limit is exactly that breadth: as a broad survey spanning three centuries across a vast geographic area, it necessarily treats any one region, ruler or religious development at a survey level, so a claim needing depth on one specific Hellenistic kingdom or cult needs a more focused specialist source.
