A reference encyclopedia biography of Gabriel Malagrida, an Italian Jesuit missionary and confessor to the Marquesa de Tavora, arrested after the September 1758 attempted assassination of King Jose I of Portugal, an affair the Marquis of Pombal used to move against the Society of Jesus. Unable to sustain a treason charge against Malagrida without the Inquisition's cooperation, Pombal had his own brother installed to replace the sitting Grand Inquisitor, and Malagrida was tried and convicted of heresy instead, over writings attributed to him including a treatise on the Antichrist, his actual authorship never proved. He was garrotted and his body then burned at Rossio Square in Lisbon on 21 September 1761, the last person executed by the Portuguese Inquisition for heresy and the case that most damaged Pombal's international reputation.
