The General Commission on Archives and History's own landmark record for John Street United Methodist Church documents that Philip Embury, an Irish Methodist immigrant, began preaching again at his cousin Barbara Heck's urging and held the first Methodist society meeting in New York City in 1766, that the growing congregation met in rented rooms before purchasing land on John Street, and that it dedicated Wesley Chapel there in 1768, the first Methodist meeting house built in the American colonies.
