The Handbook of South American Indians, volume 1, The Marginal Tribes, edited by Julian Steward for the Smithsonian Institution's Bureau of American Ethnology, 1946, is a scholarly reference work. Its strength is that it gathers detailed ethnographic accounts of many South American peoples from specialist contributors in one authoritative reference. Its limit is the ordinary one for a major ethnographic reference now nearly eighty years old: its terminology and some of its ethnographic framing reflect the discipline's conventions at the time, and later fieldwork has updated much of the specific detail.
