States because there is no central authority that speaks for all Quakers, modern Friends exhibit significant variation in how they interpret their traditions and practice their beliefs, including on LGBTQ equality. States that while none of the three major associations of Friends in the United States has made a statement affirming the right of same-sex couples to marriage equality, the Canadian Yearly Meeting approved a supportive statement in August 2003 affirming that a same-sex relationship is equal in value to an opposite-sex one, and the American Friends Service Committee endorsed civil marriage equality in January 2004. States Friends differ from many Christian bodies on ordained ministry and have no formal ordination process.
