Imperial Rescript on the Construction of a New Japan (Ningen Sengen)

The Imperial Rescript on the Construction of a New Japan, popularly known as the Ningen Sengen or Humanity Declaration, is Emperor Showa's own 1946 imperial rescript in which he renounced the traditional claim of divine status attached to the Japanese throne. As the emperor's own instrument in his own words, published by the Government of Japan, it is the direct and authoritative primary source for what the emperor himself stated and when. Its limit is that it is the political and religious instrument itself rather than independent historical analysis of the postwar circumstances, largely shaped by the Allied occupation, that produced it, which a dedicated history of the period addresses separately.
