Instruction on Christian Freedom and Liberation, known as Libertatis Conscientia, is the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith's own 1986 instruction, following its 1984 predecessor, on liberation theology. Its authority is that of the Vatican doctrinal office issuing it with the pope's approval, making it the authoritative record of the church's own corrective position at that date. Its limit is that it is the position of one side in a real theological dispute, not an independent history of liberation theology or a neutral account of the movement it addresses. Cite it for the Vatican's own stated position; an independent account of liberation theology itself needs a separate scholarly source.
