Adeeb Khalid's history of Soviet religious policy toward Islam in Central Asia and of the region's religious life since the Soviet Union's collapse in 1991. Khalid is a historian of Central Asia at Carleton College, and this University of California Press monograph is a standard scholarly account of the closure and destruction of the great majority of the region's mosques, madrasas and Sufi lodges under Soviet anti-religious campaigns, and of the rapid revival of mosque building, religious education and public religious practice after 1991. Use it for the dated arc from Soviet suppression to post-Soviet revival; a claim about a specific present-day national religious policy needs a more current source.
