Jami at-Tirmidhi

Jami at-Tirmidhi, compiled by the ninth century hadith scholar Muhammad al-Tirmidhi and read here from the Sunnah.com digital edition, is one of the six canonical Sunni hadith collections and is the primary textual source for the enumerated list of the ninety nine names of God as a fixed set. Its strength is that it is a foundational primary collection within Sunni hadith scholarship, carrying its own internal grading tradition. Its limit is precisely the one Tirmidhi himself recorded: he marked the hadith listing all ninety nine names gharib, meaning transmitted through a single narrator chain, and most hadith critics since have graded the report weak, holding that the number ninety nine is well attested elsewhere while this specific enumerated list is not. A claim citing the list should say so, following Tirmidhi's own assessment rather than treating the enumeration as equally sound as the collection around it.
