Vincent Lebot, Mark Merlin and Lamont Lindstrom bring botanical, chemical and anthropological expertise together, and this Yale University Press book is their combined scholarly treatment of Piper methysticum, the kava plant, across its botany, its chemistry and its ceremonial and political role in societies across Oceania. Its strength is exactly that interdisciplinary range, botanist, chemist and anthropologist working in one volume let it connect the plant's chemistry to its actual ritual and political use, including the history of its cultivars, in a way a single-discipline study could not. Its limit is that it was published in 1992, so a claim about more recent kava research, including later pharmacological or public health findings, needs a more current source.
