Kepler

Max Caspar's biography of Kepler, translated by C. Doris Hellman, is a classic and still widely cited scholarly life of the astronomer, written by a Kepler scholar who also edited Kepler's collected works, giving Caspar direct command of the primary documentary record. Its treatment of Kepler's own religious convictions, his understanding of astronomy as an act of piety tracing God's geometric design, and his troubled relationship with both Lutheran orthodoxy and imperial patronage, draws on that documentary depth.
