King of the Witches: The World of Alex Sanders

June Johns's King of the Witches: The World of Alex Sanders is a contemporary biographical account, published by Peter Davies, of Alex Sanders and his founding role in Alexandrian Wicca, written and published while Sanders himself was actively cultivating public attention as a self styled king of the witches. Johns had direct access to Sanders and his circle, giving the book real value as a period document of how Sanders presented himself and his movement to the wider public at the time. Its limit is significant, it is a largely uncritical, sympathetic biography of a subject known for his own self promotion, produced without the distance a later independent historian would bring, so a claim about the more extravagant biographical details Sanders himself supplied benefits from being checked against later, more critical historical treatments of Alexandrian Wicca's founding.
